Datacraft Scales New High With Its Wireless LAN Implementation

Singapore -- The Singapore Flyer, the worlds tallest observation wheel, which enables passengers to enjoy continuous audio and video entertainment during their 30-minute ride. The one-year project was commissioned by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
The implementation of wireless switches and access points by Datacraft in the project enables up to 784 passengers in all the 28 air-conditioned capsules to view and listen to information and entertainment broadcasts, while the wheel is in motion.
This is the first time any vendor has implemented a wireless solution for such a high-rise, massive, spinning and continuously moving structure, which meant that we had no prior reference and had to start from scratch in designing, developing and deploying the solution. The success of this project is an affirmation of our strong technical capability and our ability to innovate. I am glad that we were successful in undertaking this unique challenge as it would be an excellent reference site for such future projects, said Hidetaka Kai, General Manager for Datacraft Japan.
As a result of the successful wireless implementation, the operating company of the Singapore Flyer is now able to offer its passengers a flexible and dynamic communications medium for entertainment, information, emergency broadcasts, and even able to provide advanced communication tools such as digital signage, which can be used for various interactive services in the future.
Implementing a wireless LAN for the Singapore Flyer presented significant technical challenges, said Ryo Miyoshi, Project Leader for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. “We are particularly appreciative of Datacrafts project management expertise and its teamwork internally and with Cisco Systems.
Commenting on Datacraft as a partner, Tomoki Nakamura, Managing Director, Channels, Cisco Japan said: “We are very glad that we were able to build the wireless LAN for the Singapore Flyer together with Datacraft Japan by tapping on its broad consultation capabilities and proven technical expertise plus regional coverage.
Reaching 42 stories high, the Flyer comprises a 150-metre diameter wheel, built over a three-story terminal building, giving it a total height of 165 metres and offers panoramic views of the city centre and beyond upto about 45 kilometres, including the Indonesian islands of Batam and Bintan, as well as Johor in Malaysia. The Singapore Flyer was officially launched on 15 April 2008.
