Apdex Alliance Certifies Strangeloop Networks' AS1000 Application Scaling Appliance

) December 9, 2008 -- The Application Performance Index (Apdex) Alliance today announced that Strangeloop Networks' AS1000 Application Scaling Appliance is the first network device to be Apdex Certified. The Apdex Alliance, comprised of six industry leaders and more than 800 practitioners worldwide, is dedicated to ensuring that enterprises have a standardized, numerical measure of users' satisfaction of website performance.

The Apdex metric and reporting methodology was created to give both IT staff and business managers the ability to track application performance and link it to business requirements, an invaluable feature for furthering customer satisfaction and driving business success. Apdex is designed to support any computing application, but with the rapid growth of web applications, Apdex is positioned as a key metric for linking a company's unique business requirements directly to what is occurring in the network and to the experience their customers, partners or employees are having using the web application.

"As the importance of managing performance of web applications continues to increase, enterprises are being defined more and more by their ability to understand end-users' expectations and satisfaction," said Peter Sevcik, Apdex Alliance executive director and president of NetForecast. "With the Apex certification and Strangeloop's AS1000 analytics features, companies using their appliance to accelerate web applications can quantifiably track application performance and easily assess what performance their users are experiencing, enabling administrators to quickly address issues that may arise."

The Apdex alliance introduced certification to verify for enterprises that a vendor has accurately interpreted the Apdex standard and implemented measurement and reporting functions according the standard. The Strangeloop AS1000 appliance, designed to accelerate web applications, incorporates the Apdex measure in two areas: real time monitoring through the Strangeloop Dashboard, and historical reporting through the Strangeloop Performance Analysis features.

"The Apdex metric helps customers ensure their applications are meeting performance expectations by defining "acceptable' in terms of what performance their customer is seeing. With Apdex reporting in the Strangeloop AS1000 our customers can measure, in real-time, not merely what the network is doing, but specifically what their users are experiencing on their sites," said Jonathan Bixby, chief executive officer of Strangeloop. "In addition, as the Strangeloop AS1000 appliance is designed to improve web application performance, our customers can adjust application acceleration treatments to ensure performance continuously meets customer expectations."

About the Apdex metric
Apdex is a numerical measure of user satisfaction that converts many measurements of time users waited for a task to complete into a value on a uniform scale of 0-to-1 (0 = no users satisfied, 1 = all users satisfied). Task response time is defined as the elapsed time between when a user makes a request and when the system responds such that the user can proceed with the process. Each company can individually determine their own target response time for a satisfactory response. The methodology then automatically creates three performance zones for any measurement sample: satisfactory, tolerating and frustrated. The final number, ranging from 0 - 1, is a simple mathematical formula: The number of satisfied samples plus half of the tolerating samples plus none of the frustrated samples, divided by all the samples.
