ABB and Trilliant Announce Interoperable Advanced Smart Grid Solutions

) September 22, 2009 -- ABB, the leading power and automation technology company, and Trilliant Incorporated, a leader in delivering Smart Grid solutions that enhance energy efficiency, utility operations, and renewable resource integration, today announced successful interoperability of Trilliant's SecureMesh™ communications network with ABB's Station Automation and Protection products, enabling utilities to choose best-of-breed technologies for their Smart Grid rollouts. This announcement was made today as part of activities at GridWeek 2009, held in Washington, DC.

"The Smart Grid is moving into a phase where distribution automation is becoming critical, and this capability is largely dependent on the reliability of high-bandwidth, low-latency solutions," said Gary Rackliffe, ABB Vice President, Smart Grids. "For this reason, we are particularly excited to be working with Trilliant to integrate our solutions and help deliver them to a growing market."

The demonstration is another indicator of the increasing capability within the Smart Grid market and the power of standards-based technology solutions available to today's forward-thinking utilities. Trilliant's SecureMesh communications network is based on open standards to ensure out-of-the-box interoperability with the leading distribution automation equipment. The network infrastructure supports applications ranging from electric meter data collection to low-latency monitoring and control of distribution automation devices, including a wide variety of Station Automation and Protection products from ABB.

"The successful deployment of Smart Grid networks around the world requires cooperation, innovation, and shared best practices," said Andy White, President and CEO of Trilliant. "The demonstrated interoperability of Trilliant's SecureMesh network with ABB's automation products is another significant proof point in the maturation of the Smart Grid."

Interoperability of distribution protection, control and automation devices was conducted using Trilliant's SecureMesh Gateway and Connector WAN products. A series of peer-to-peer and data protocol packet delivery speed tests were conducted using DNP 3.0, IEC61850, and Modbus protocols simultaneously within Trilliant's SecureMesh communications network. The outcome was extremely fast switching and restoration scheme coordination between multiple devices using multiple protocols. Performance tests were completed using ABB's Station Automation COM 600, and REF 615 and REF 550 advanced feeder protection and control devices:

  • ABB COM 600 is an all-in-one communication gateway, automation platform, and user interface solution for utility and industrial distribution substations. The gateway functionality provides connectivity between substation Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and network-level control and management systems.
  • ABB REF 615 is a dedicated feeder protection IED aligned for the protection, control, measurement, and supervision of utility substations and industrial power systems. It includes innovative imbedded switching capability for Modbus, DNP and IEC61850 protocols.
  • Designed for protecting and controlling distribution and sub-transmission line systems, ABB REF 550 is an advanced feeder protection system with the latest innovations in protection, control, and automation features.
